Description of the 53rd District:

The 53rd District encompasses the southeast corner of Shawnee County and the far southwest corner of Douglas County. There are about 22,000 people living in about 8000 households. About 30% of the District’s patrons live in the city of Topeka. About 6% live in Douglas County. We also have some significant areas of entertainment and industry. Our district includes Forbes Field, Heartland Park, Lake Shawnee, parts of Clinton Lake, and two golf courses.

We have a relatively young district. Thirty-one percent of our citizens are 19 or younger and twenty percent are 55 or older. We have students in Shawnee Heights, Auburn-Washburn, Topeka, and Lawrence school districts. We have six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school in our district.
